ABC of Zentangle..I

A little Zen, and some Tangles..
( To understand, and learn Zentangle®)

I for Interesting, Inspiring, Intuitive, Impromptu...and I.

There could be many words beginning with I, but I want to associate the above mentioned words with practicing Zentangle. In the last 3 years that I have been practicing, and teaching Zentangle, I have come across the above words being used by the students to describe their experiences with Zentangle. The last word, 'I', of course is added by me here.

For me, the word I stands for individuality to egoistic attitude. Harmless state to highly difficult one! The word 'I' is very complex. Can practicing Zentangle help simplify this 'I'? From my limited experience, my answer would be, 'May', or 'May not'. It does have a potential, but it is also just a tool. How you use a tool determines the end result.

If you use Zentangle only as an 'art', to be monetized, then perhaps you are heavily under utilizing its potential. When you cross the commercial temptations, you enter into the realm of transformation...you can then begin to 'simplify' this 'I'.

I would love to have your views too.

And in the meanwhile here is my Interesting (hope so), inspiring, intuitive and impromptu Zentangle Art using some I tangles, followed by the demo video to help freshers to learn tangling.

ABC of Zentangle...H

A little Zen, and some Tangles..
( To understand, and learn Zentangle®)

H for Healing, Happiness...

There was a gap of a couple of weeks in continuation of this series as the season for Corporate/Govt officers training began and we were off to the lovely campus of Initiatives of Change at Panchgani, a tiny hill station in Maharashtra, near Pune. Two weeks of hectic activities and we are back to Bangalore for a breather. Hope to make up for the two weeks, and work out to adjust with the coming weeks when we will be in and out of Panchgani.

So, I have chosen Healing and Happiness for H.

Here is a zentangle art created using some randomly selected tangles named with H as the first letter-

ABC of  Zentangle..H, Tangles used are Henna Drum, Hollibaugh, Huggins, Hi-Cs and Heart Rope 
And here is the video demonstrating the creation of the above zentangle. With this, we have put up 32 tangles in 8 videos including this one.

And now some Zen on Healing and Happiness..

The Zentangle World is rife with the stories of healing and happiness. From my experience, I would like to recount the story of one of my students, Mrs Prabhu, who had gone through a major surgery, post chemo, found indulgence in Zentangle on her hospital bed 'healing'. You may click on her name above to read more.

Another elderly student of mine, a 78 year old lady had just lost her husband. She was plunged into loneliness and there for a sort of depressed feeling. She learnt Zentangle, and got hooked on to it. Reason? well she found pracicing Zentangle kept her in the 'here and now' state. The happiness, and so also sadness can only be experienced in the present moment. Those who have tendency to get plunged into sadness or regrets if they dwell into past, or get into anxiety mode if they focus on future (this could happen often to elderly people), must be helped to remain in the present moment as far as possible. Practicing Zentangle does that.

Let me begin with presenting my zentangle image here under answering Diva's challenge no. 182 with stripes in the form of the border. I also answer the ABC Wednesday this week with G as the letter, and present in my series ABC of Zentangle.. G with all the tangles used in the image, including the border, beginning with the letter G. And there after I present a video demonstrating 4 tangles with G. Hope you all enjoy it.

And now some Zen:
G for Growth- 

The whole World is rooted in this magical word called 'GROWTH'. Every individual wants to grow, and keep growing in stature, earnings, amassing wealth. Every corporate/business entity desires the growth graph always going northwards, in its bottom line, in its assets build up. Every country looks for continuous, positive growth in their GDP, all the times, again, in the monetary terms. It would appear that we all tend to take this trend as very normal, and NATURAL.

But, I differ. The word NATURAL takes my thoughts to its root, NATURE. Nothing in Nature is unlimited. Nothing keeps growing continuously. What goes up, comes down. Hence, how can the human being's desire to a perpetual growth  could be termed 'Natural'. In fact such a desire is unnatural, and hence non-achievable! Because, the growth is being desired in terms of commodity called MONEY, and money is only a man made means of exchange, not at all a commodity! And the stuff you keep exchanging for money, things made of matter, keeps on depleting as all the matter stuff come from the limited resources in and around the NATURE (Earth). So, the materialistic, outer growth for ALL is a myth.

What about INNER GROWTH? Well, it is non-materialistic, and hence desirable if it can shift our focus away from the material. The inner growth could happen when the factors fueling outer growth, such as excessive desires, selfishness, greed, jealousy, ego and blind attachments to material etc are controlled and diminished.

Aligning our nature with the Nature could help. This brings to the other two words I have chosen- Giving, and Generosity. Joy of Giving is always superior to the 'pleasure'(ephemeral happiness) of Taking. And this attitude can be developed if we operate from GENEROSITY. Nipun Mehta explains beautifully in this TEDx talk how to design our life for generosity-

ABC of Zentangle..F, F for Focus, Fear, Freedom..

Focus on getting Freedom from Fear..

The Zen part first..

Fear is one of the emotions we are born with. Its main function is to fore warn us for our safety, our protection. This exists in Nature. All animals, all creatures have it. But we humans have discovered its use as a tool for selfish motives. So, we started inflicting fears on others to have our work done. Different aspects of fear that we use, as well as experience are, threat, punishment, deprivation, anger, upsets, anxiety, frustration etc..

In fact, the fear culture begins at home. Lavishly we use false, even illogical threats on small children to make them eat their food, drink their milk, do their home work, and so on.

At the work place, we set threatening conditions to complete the task or else... memos, stoppage of increments, suspension, denial of promotion etc, etc

Governments collect their taxes under threats of severe punishments for defaults..

In other words, the whole World is running on FEAR. And what are the results? Fragmentations, breakdowns, separations, selfishness, greed, power centers, vandalism, terrorism, anarchy.

And all these happen because we fear the fear, even though the statistics say 98% fears do not come true!

The opposite of fear is LOVE.  Love unites, it heals people, it provides larger purpose, inclusiveness grows, involvement increases, creativity develops... The problem is establishing selfless love takes much longer time where as fear works instantly, though, over time, fear produces diminishing returns where as love creates increasing returns.

So, the goal could be to focus on getting freedom from fear... Well, one can not run away from fear over night given that for centuries we have been raised under the shadow of fear. But can we start focussing on moving towards love? Over period, fear factor can diminish and love could grow in the Universe.

Enough of the Zen.

 Let me present tangles on F, with a one line message in favor of Zentangle that practicing zentangle builds focus, and when we do zentangles with emotion of love at heart, we grow in the direction of empathy, kindness, tolerance, mutual respect, acceptance,attitude of giving, unselfishness etc etc, all these being the aspect of love.

ABC of Zentangle..E, E for Ease, Easy


Take it Easy...
A little Zen, and some Tangles..
( To understand, and learn Zentangle®)

Linked to ABC Wednesday and Diva's challenge no. 180


How often have we heard this phrase? When ever under stress or tension, this phrase comes in handy. The difficulty, however, is, 'how to take it easy?' The baggage of the past, the ever shrinking patience, excessive desires, selfish motives, avarice, ego and inability to stomach other's happiness could all be the possible reasons to induce stress or tension. And if the antidote is 'to take it easy', it must be a very deep remedy. Perhaps when you work at the cause level, the effect has to be different.

Hundreds of practitioners of  Zentangle have found it working as a remedy to many of those causes. and practicing Zentangle is EASY! So, take it easy...it will put you at EASE!

So, the tangle for this post..

And now some Zen...

Chuang Tzu, one of the greatest Chinese philosophers wrote this poem some 2300 years ago..

"EASY IS RIGHT. BEGIN RIGHT AND YOU ARE EASY.


CONTINUE EASY, AND YOU ARE RIGHT.

THE RIGHT WAY TO GO EASY IS TO FORGET THE RIGHT WAY
AND FORGET THAT THE GOING IS EASY."

I read this, an reread  several times. I just could not fathom it. Not so easy. But look at how Osho, one of  the current era's best known philosophers explains it. He says about Chuang Tzu,


"His uniqueness is that he talks in absurdities. All his poems and stories are just absurd. And his reason to choose absurdity as his expression is very significant: the mind has to be silenced. With anything rational, it cannot stop; it goes on and on. Anything logical and the mind finds nourishment through it. It is only the absurd that suddenly shocks the mind - it is beyond mind's grasp. 


His stories, his poems and his other statements are so absurd that either people simply left him, thinking that he is mad.... Those who were courageous enough to remain with him found that no other meditation is needed. Just listening to his absurd statements, the mind stops functioning. And that is the meaning of meditation."

I like this very meaningful connection between mind and meditation. In fact he goes on to say that 'meditation is not of the mind'. 'No mind' is what we describe as meditation. 

And my focused purpose here is to suggest that practicing Zentangle creates a 'no mind' like situation, and hence a meditative state with all the benefits it can offer to curb the causes for 'uneasy', stressful and tense situations..  

Let us connect this uneasiness issue with Osho explaining the meaning of the poem-

 EASY IS RIGHT. BEGIN RIGHT AND YOU ARE EASY. That has to be the criterion. If you feel uneasiness, tension, then what you have started cannot be right.
CONTINUE EASY AND YOU ARE RIGHT.
And the last part is something never to be forgotten. THE RIGHT WAY TO GO EASY IS TO FORGET THE RIGHT WAY - because even to remember it is an uneasiness. THE RIGHT WAY TO GO EASY IS TO FORGET THE RIGHT WAY AND FORGET THAT THE GOING IS EASY. What is the need of remembering these things? 

Let me pause here, and conclude this post which has a specific goal of presenting Zentangle, the way I look at it , to both, the novices as well as those who are already hooked on to practicing Zentangle, one post at a time, through one letter at a post!

ABC of Zentangle..D, D for Design & Discipline


Design, and Discipline.


A little Zen, and some Tangles..

Let me begin with the word Discipline.

The Zen part of the post:

Several situations flash in my mind..
School discipline, Academic discipline, military discipline, road discipline, food/eating discipline, dress discipline, playfield discipline, party discipline...and finally self discipline.

By and large, the word discipline refers to one's behaviour vis-vis timing, place and situation. You are a disciplined person if you behave in a right/appropriate manner at the at the right/appropriate occasion, place and timing. However, all these outer manifestations have a direct connection with our inner/self discipline.

Self-discipline is the ability to control one's feelings and overcome one's weaknesses; the ability to pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it.Self-discipline and self-control gives one power over his/her life. It there for also means controlling the mind. Most often we choose to repress the mind to save the situation rather than discipline the mind.

Osho, an extra ordinary philosopher and a mystic of the last century, was answering a question from one of his followers on the matter of 'disciplining' the mind versus repressing it.'

He says, 'The difference is so great that it is impossible to miss it. Repression happens through fighting with your mind. Discipline happens through being watchful, aware, alert. In discipline, there is no fight implied. In discipline, there is no condemnation, no evaluation. One simply looks at the mind silently, seeing the whole traffic without saying what is right and what is wrong, what should be and what should not be, just as standing by the side of the road you watch the people walking by - saints and sinners, beautiful people, ugly people, good people, bad people...'

Osho further describes the process of self discipline-

'A mother was telling her child, “Be very careful when you go to school because the traffic is dangerous at rush hour time.”
The child said, “Don’t be worried. I always wait by the side of the road. When a gap comes by, then I cross the road.”
“When a gap comes by…” As you are looking at your mind you will be surprised: gaps come by, intervals when there is nothing to be seen. The observer remains alone and because it is alone it is no longer as observer either.You can’t call it an observer because there is nothing to observe. The mirror is there, but it is not reflecting anything. There is no duality of the seen and the seer. In these intervals discipline arises.

The word 'discipline' is also beautiful. It is sometimes very significant to go to the root of words. 'Discipline' comes from a root which means learning. When you are looking at a gap, learning happens. Learning about what? Learning about yourself, because there is nothing else. You are full of awareness. You are just full of your own being, overflowing. And this experience of just being yourself, overflowing, undistracted by anything, undisturbed by anything is the greatest learning. The greatest possibility of knowing the truth. This is discipline!'

Now let me bring in Zentangle in the context of its DESIGN.

It goes to the credit of Rick and Maria (Creators of Zentangle) to have carefully designed the process of zentangle that creates the 'gaps' described in the above paragraph. What with 'no pre-planning, and post judgement' rule while creating a zentangle. There is very little scope for the mind to meander! 'One stroke at a time', giving all your best to that stroke means you are compulsorily in the present moment.

 A good design is a process/means that takes you to its(logical) end (desired state). Zentangle does it, and does it very well.

Osho speaks on Discipline on his discourse series give at Osho Commune, Pune, India during spring and summer of 1980 (Excerpted from the book “Walking in Zen Sitting in Zen”).

Osho, you say: Go beyond the mind. Do not listen to its chatter. Discipline it and make it a servant. Do not be its slave. But how to know when the mind is being disciplined and when it is being repressed? Also, when I took sannyas the other night you said not to get hooked on you. I have to tell you that you are closing the stable door after this particular horse has already bolted.

The difference is so great that it is impossible to miss it. Repression happens through fighting with your mind. Discipline happens through being watchful, aware, alert. In discipline, there is no fight implied. In discipline, there is no condemnation, no evaluation. One simply looks at the mind silently, seeing the whole traffic, without saying what is right and what is wrong, what should be and what should not be, just as, standing by the side of the road, you watch the people walking by – saints and sinners, beautiful people, ugly people, good people, bad people – but you are unconcerned. It has nothing to do with you; you are out of it.
That’s exactly the meaning of the English word “ecstasy”. Ecstasy means to be out of the mind. You are just looking, as one looks at the clouds moving in the sky or at the river flowing by – cool, detached. Neither are you trying to cling to something nor are you trying to push something away from you.
This is pure awareness: you are only a mirror. And in just being a mirror, the miracle happens – the miracle of discipline. Slowly slowly, the traffic starts disappearing. Less and less thoughts are moving on the road, less and less pictures are appearing on the screen, less and less memories, fantasies. Gaps start appearing.

Bijou's Wisdome..1

'Slow' is not a bad word. 

In fact 'fast' is the word to be looked at with caution. If you move fast, and it is a wrong direction, you meet with the disaster fast! In many ways, the 'fast' culture the World had adopted in the past few decades (Fast pace, Fast food, Fast production, Fast consumption, Fast profits, Fast population growth, Fast travel...) is the reason why we as the human race are in turmoil, and face most undesirable consequences..

Slow down, says Bijou. Think, says Bijou. Plan well, says Bijou. Execute with conviction, says Bijou. Here is my response to Diva's challenge no. 179, asking us to use Bijou (5 cm X 5 cm) tiles.



For those who may not be knowing who is Bijou, let me explain. Bijou is the name given to a character created by Rick and Maria out of a snail. Also,  5 cm X 5 cm size tiles are also named as Bijou tiles.

ABC of Zentangle..., C for Creativity

As I See It..


A little Zen, and some Tangles..

What would be your response to a straight forward question, 'Are you a creative person?'

My experience is, about 10% respondents are confidant that they are. Majority of the rest are not very sure, and only a small segment confirms that they are not!

Why this polarisation?

 I have my own explanation. In my case the culprit was my art teacher at the school. Probably it was 7th, or 8th grade when the art teacher proclaimed only few in the class as who 'could draw'.  The rest were classified as 'can not draw' category. I was in the larger group. Over period, this 'can not draw' belief got transformed in to 'not being creative'. Period.

This belief grows and becomes a life sentence for most of us. But believe me, the sentence can be revoked. Because, each one of us has creativity within us. And Zentangle® method precisely goes on to establish it. You will know it when you indulge in it!

However, since the word I have chosen is CREATIVITY, let me present here, through a zentangle  illustration, principles of creativity. This presentation is inspired by 'Keys to drawing with imagination', by Bert Dodson. On the pages of introduction, he describes 8 principles for creativity...

Principles for Creativity
tangles used are: Chard, Cayke, Cadent, Chainlea, CO2, 'Cockles and Mussels', Casella and Ciceron
The first principle says, 'Creativity occurs in action'. I had a few ideas for presenting these principles in this post, but the zentangle tree started emerging only when I put pencil and the pen on paper. And the idea of making a tree was not a very jazzy one. So the second principle that 'Creativity begins with simple ideas' got established.

The third one says, ' Creativity lives in the present', Try creating anything while your mind is either stuck in the past, or roaming in to the future! When I was creating the above illustration, I was absolutely in the present moment.

Can anybody deny the fourth principle that 'Creativity increases with practice'? I began creating zentangles nearly three years ago, and I see a distinct improvement in my work over these three years. I must have created more than 250 tiles so far.

We were also taught during the Certified Zentangle Teacher's seminar at Providence, RI, that 'there is no post judgement' in zentangle. And we were also subtly inspired to give positive comments to other tanglers' work, and both these conditions only helped one to grow in zentangle. That, precisely is the fifth principle-'Creativity increases as judgement and criticism decrease'.

If I had to make 'any' illustration, on 'any' subject, I don't think I would have thought of creating the above illustration on the principles for creativity. Specific diktat that this post is on 'C', and my own self created constrain that I will write in these posts only about zentangle, helped me to come out with this piece of art. Further, the another constrain that I will use the tangles beginning with 'C' only, got better out of me in making the illustration interesting. That establishes the sixth principle, 'Creativity likes constraints and specifics'

The 7th principle is self evident - 'Creativity emerges in experimentation, manipulation and explorations'.Most of the tangles created for zentangle are the result of this principle. And the 8th principle takes the cake. 'Creativity is about having a plan, and a willingness to depart from it'  In fact, one of the most important rules of Zentangle is, 'NO PLANNING'. Down the line, while creating a zentangle, some loose, vague plans may emerge, and quickly it may get altered. In the above illustration, at some stage I thought I would create a border, and what came out was partial border being balanced out by the narration of 8th principle!

Bert Dodson represents the Western, absolutely logical body of principles for creativity. I would also want you to have a look at an Eastern Mystic's(Philosophical) way of looking at creativity. The short video presents few slides inspired by Osho's book, ' Creativity- Unleashing the power within' . When East meets West, magic could happen!

Teacher and the Taught..

Should there be any age wise distinction between the teacher and the taught?

My answer is NO.

Age is only a chronology. Ability is important to be able to pass on your knowledge, skills, wisdom etc, etc
Most of the 'grown ups' today are 'learning' all about gadgets, and gizmos, and computers, and software etc from their children and grand children!

But why have I picked up this topic? Because, I understand that Diva's challenge no. 177 is designed by Caroline Broady, the World's Youngest CZT! Truffle is the name of the tangle she has designed.

So, here is my response to this challenge.

ABC of Zentangle...B

As I See It..


A little Zen, and some Tangles..
( To understand, and learn Zentangle®)

Welcome back to the second post in the new series of ABC Wednesday, and the letter is B. So, let us look at some of the words beginning with B, and have some connection with either zen, or tangle! And, again do not miss a new video at the end. 

I have chosen B for Beating Stress, and Being in the present as the Zen part of the post, and 'Bulbul (Red whiskered bulbul)' as the tangle part of the post.

ABC of Zentangle..B - Bulbul.Tangles used are, Baton, Bunzo, Bales, Blank-it, Birds on the wire, Barney and Borbz


This is a lovely bird, called Red whiskered Bulbul , and is  commonly found in Panchgani, a small town nestling in the Western Ghats in Maharastra , India.  I have used the outline of this bird and filled it up with variety of tangles, all starting with B. Such an art where a known object is chosen as an outline, and filled up with tangles is called ZIA - Zentangle Inspired Art. This is, perhaps, a next logical step after one has gained reasonable proficiency in creating pure (abstract) zentangle arts. So, enjoy the ZIA

I have a fascinating story to tell behind creating this ZIA. 

While at the campus of Initiatives of Change, Panchgani during the months of May-June this year I witnessed the birth of a new baby bulbul. This occupied a considerable amount of my mind and time as I kept watching, and clicking pictures of, the bulbul couple right from the time they were busy building their nest in the adjoining utility room.

The whole drama unfolded over about 10 days period, from 18th May to 28th May, 2014.



I left Panchgani on 29th of May, only to return on 13th of June. My first visit was to the pantry room. The nest was empty. It wore a deserted look. The little bulbul had developed wings and had flown away..! It was there that I decided to make a ZIA of the bulbul.

And now some zen...

How does practicing zentangle help in beating stress? Stress is the dissipation of energy while doing nothing. I used to get stressed out waiting for being called in by the senior Govt officers. Punctuality was never maintained. I had learnt to carry a book which helped. But after I was exposed to zentangle, I have found a great solace in it.

Once an officer took an hour and a half to come out and meet me as against a promised 10 minutes. I pulled out my pocket diary and created a beautiful zentangle vase. I was as fresh for the discussion, as I should have been. Only the officer was feeling a bit guilty!

Zentangle practice also keeps you in the very present moment while creating the zentangle art.  Zentangle rules say, 'no pre-planning, and no post judgement' when you stick to this rule, you get locked in to the present moment. You are focusing on those small repetitive strokes which makes 'no sense' to your mind at that moment, and hence offers no triggers to the mind to ramble either in the past, or in the future.

Most of the senior citizens, or bored house wives would benefit tremendously if they learnt and practiced zentangle, as they have the tendency, and plenty of time to slip away into unpleasant past or unclear future.
