Spiraling Out..

There is a great inspiration in the title..

Spiraling out..Opening up, expanding the horizon, experiencing freedom, Growth, Reaching out for unknown, Moving beyond fears. These are all the meanings I am deriving from this term.

But, first, my response to Diva's challenge no. 160, string to be used is 'SPIRAL OUT'

And what I have done here is something unusual! The tile I am presenting here was done a while ago, and I thought I had not put my signature on it. So, I simply put it when Malathi (my wife) saw it and questioned my honesty...! She declared that the tile was done by her... and not me. And I kept staring at it.. If I could not differentiate it, I think it oly suggests how we are moving closer to each other!

So, with her permission, I am proclaiming it as my response here. If you like it, the credit will of course go to Malathi.

And now, a bit on the happiness topic:

I think, I have already said it all while describing 'spiraling out' above. It is happiness when one reaches out. Reaches out to unknown!

Some time ago I was returning home after arriving back into my city, by an auto riksha ( a unique 3 wheeler public transport vehicle, seen in Asian countries), and I found the driver to be a bit off color. I got into conversation only to confirm my hunch that he had fought with his wife the previous day, and had not gone home since. Further probing revealed that his 5 year old daughter was denied admission to the government school for want of age proof. A traditional method used to be to ask the child to wrap her/his arm over the crown of the head and touch the ear on the opposite side. If the child can reach the ear, he/she can be admitted in to the school. This Auto driver's daughter was too tiny (physically), and could not reach out to her ear in the above manner. She was rejected.

His wife pushed him to explore private schools but there he was asked for capitation fee which he did not have a provision for. The fight centered around this issue of their child being left out while all other neighborhood children were going to school.

Something happened to me inside, and I extended to him a major part of the lump sum he needed. Totally unknown person. I have not seen him again, but, the act of reaching out to him continues to make me feel satisfied.. happy.

Do share your stories of reaching out to some one without any ulterior motives.. And if you do not have a story, actually reach out to some one and write about it!

Z-Inspiration Workshop at Bangalore, March, 2014

This was perhaps 5th zentangle workshop in Bangalore this calendar year.

17 students comprised of an 8th grade student to a 76 year old lady, a Fine Arts student, a Dental College Professor, a few executives from the IT and ITES Corporate worlds, a business man and a few home makers.
Here are the lovey tiles created by them all FIRST TIME IN THEIR LIFE!

A very satisfying day, if I have to go by what feed back they had to give. Here are their words of encouragement, though the 'hot weather' in the day did cause some discomforts.

And here is the Feed Back:

I loved the zentangle concept! Thanks you!

Very Interesting and fulfilling!

Loved the workshop! Can't wait to take Zentangle forward & see what I can come up with!

Interesting class. Was happy to discover that doodling was an actual art form. Disappointed with the facility, though, Too hot to conduct this in this place. Hope to keep in touch

Very good workshop, it has given me a lot of confidence for all the doodling that I will be doing. Thanks.

V interesting.....amazing!!

Very interesting, enjoyed myself and learnt a lot. Please keep the group engaged in the future as well. Would love to be a part of it.

I enjoyed this workshop a lot today. I learnt a lot from this workshop apart from doodling. I would also like to be informed about more such workshops if conducted.

It is a great learning experience for all. An art work developing any age, any place and any one. Thank you for the wonderful experience.

Very interesting workshop.... Can you conduct some classes in South Bangalore also?

An amazing workshop. Created a lot of wonder in my mind. As a person interested in human behaviour, and meditation, this 'art' came as a complete surprise!

Malathi and Dilip are such fine human beings - wanting the best for others. It comes out so well during the session.

And finally, watch this home made video to see all the actions!

We do intend to engage more batches in the days to come, after making due changes to beat the harshness of the weather

Thanking You,

JOG with the POT

J stands for JOG - Joy Of Giving...

This is my first encounter with ABC Wednesday, and my first linking. Hope the veterans would welcome me..

Just yesterday the World celebrated the 'International Day of Happiness' ( 20th March), And my thoughts went to the two words I often associate with happiness.-- One is PLEASURE, the 'Pleasure Of Taking ', and the other is JOY, 'the Joy Of Giving'. Pleasure is mostly sensorial, and materialisc, and hence short lived. Joy is from inside out, for doing good to somebody, and often it is long lasting. I have abbreviated them as JOG and POT, and created an innocent little game called JOG with the POT. Here are some pictures of the game excitements.

We all have both, the JOG, and the POT happening in our lives simultaneously. Unfortunately most of us concentrate on POT part, and land up in misery.

The true happiness can happen when we enhance JOG in our lives, and shrink the POT part.

What do you say?

The three leaves symbol

Diva's challenge no. 159 prompts one to take inspiration from St Patricks on the St Patrick's Day, and create a zentangle art. A little research later I got inspired by the three leaves shamrock, and green color as the symbols of St Patrick's  memory.

I have used some green and presented the three leaves a bit differently.

And now a few lines on the pursuit of Happiness, as I had mentioned in my previous post. I must acknowledge a beautiful comment on pursuing happiness by Anne. You may click for it here.

We use many different words to describe 'happiness'. E.g. satisfaction, peace, joy, pleasure, contentment etc. Let me pick up the words pleasure and joy out of the above. We generally use the word pleasure to describe sensorial inputs that makes us happy. It is temporary, out side-in approach, and hence self centered. Expression of Joy, on the other hand, is an inside out approach. It spreads to others and is long lasting. One can get joy out of 'giving', while the pleasure is always in 'taking'! Over indulgence in 'Taking' makes one selfish and greedy, while 'giving' happens from the position of abundance,

The World needs today more of GIVING, than TAKING.

Do leave behind your thoughts,

International Day of Happiness will be celebrated on 20th March, 2014, for the first time..

And later every year.

I wish to initiate  exploration of this term called 'happiness' in these posts on this blog along with presenting zentangle creations.

So, first let me present here my response to Diva's challenge no. 158. A duo tangle - Crescent Moon + Dancing Diva. I have chosen to create a ZIA here. Hope you like it.

And now let me build tha case for happiness. The Wikipedia says:

"The International Day of Happiness is celebrated throughout the world on 20 March. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly on 28 June 2012. Assembly Resolution A/RES/66/281 states in pertinent part:
Balloons of Happiness
The General Assembly,[…] Conscious that the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal,[…] Recognizing also the need for a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all peoples, Decides to proclaim 20 March the International Day of Happiness, Invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and individuals, to observe the International Day of Happiness in an appropriate manner, including through education and public awareness-raising activities[…][1]"
How should we, the tanglers, promote happiness?
It would appear that consumerism and greed has over taken the real happiness in most of the countries. It may be a good idea to create a healthy discussion on this topic. I will be happy to have your views here.

An inspired cause..

Through Erin's tangle- Charlie.

Yes, Diva has chosen Erin's Charlie as this week's UMT challenge, and I wish to use this medium to inspire some of you for a cause. But, first my response to the challenge no. 157. Here it is:

So, do let me know if you liked it.

And now the inspired cause:

8th March will be celebrated as 'International Women's Day' to empower women. However, even today, in some pockets of India there are shameful practices being perpetuated in some traditional temples. Very young girls (at the age of 6 - 7 years) are offered to the temple deity as life long 'Devadasi', meaning servant of the God/Goddess. But in reality the girls are converted into local sex worker by the local community. These women remain in abject poverty, so that they continue to remain part of the 'devadasi' system. Good Samaritans are helping these women to come out of this spiral and rehabilitate in an honorable manner.

In support of such efforts I have written an appeal for help. Please click here to know more about this appeal.

Thanking you in anticipation of your generosity.
